Philosophy

M a t i l i j a is a social justice oriented bilingual Spanish program that takes place on the unceded ancestral land of the Tongva People. Informed by Indigenous epistemologies, our land-based and play-based approach, aims to enhance children’s comprehension of history, their connection to our planet and its inhabitants. One of our core values is to guide our children in understanding our kin with all life forms so they develop an early awareness of our past and the potential for positive futures.

We work with children, parents, and staff to create a high-quality early educational environment where the emotional well-being of each child is fostered, and culture and language are embraced.

In our program, the foundations of learning are empathy, joy, love, curiosity, and respect for the whole child. We strive to provide a supportive, safe learning community that encourages discovery, inquiry and experimentation.

We believe the earliest, most memorable learning experiences come from connecting with the wonders of nature -- from experiences like catching, observing, and releasing bugs, making mud pies and  climbing trees. When we give our students opportunities to experience the beauty of nature in a safe and guided manner, we empower them with a foundation of knowledge and skills that comes from the land they inhabit.

Our experienced teachers hail from many different backgrounds and cultures, bringing diverse perspectives into our program and into our students’ experiences. We strive for our program community to represent the diversity of Los Angeles and the world.  At Matilija, we appreciate difference and celebrate the individuality of all children and families.  This includes teaching our kids in gender inclusive language and practices.
